There was a shooting and stabbing incident here in HARLEM this morning involving several of our youth. The incident happened right across the street from an elementary school where children were on their way to school. The Harlem Clergy & Community Leaders Coalition is calling an emergency meeting to come up with solutions to the issues of violence and self-destruction amongst our youth and in our community. Please come out and be part of the solution!
The meeting will be tomorrow, Tuesday, Oct. 6th at 6:30 pm at the Bethany Senior Citizen Outreach Center located at 63 West 124th Street. For more info, call Pastor Vernon Williams at 917.545.4613 or Abdul Kareem Muhammad at 646.238.3989.

Free Master's Program
This was posted on the Harlem Homes group - thought it might be of interest!
Free Master's Program...In case you know of someone!
Wake Forest University has an opportunity for minority students to attend
its MBA program for FREE, and so far, the response has been very poor.
Please, please pass along this opportunity to your friends, families, and
networks to see if there is an interest. This is a great school and a
tremendous opportunity to attend a top graduate school.
See details below. The contact person for anyone who is interested is:
Derrick S. Boone, Ph.D.
Associate Professor of Marketing
Room 3139 Worrell Professional Center
Babcock Graduate School of Management Wake Forest University
1834 Wake Forest Drive Winston-Salem, NC 27109-8758 email:

Message from Derrick S. Boone, Ph.D.:
Greetings, I wanted to let you know about a great opportunity here
at Wake Forest where you can get a FREE education and get PAID while you're
doing it. Our Dean of the Schools of Business is the former CEO of PepsiCo
and very committed to diversity. He's gone around to his CEO friends, who
have agreed to donate a bunch of money to pay tuition and fees, provide a
stipend, and a job, to diverse students. The details are below. The problem
is, response to the program has been dismal! As a faculty member, I would be
embarrassed for him to have to tell his CEO friends, "thanks so much for
your donation, but unfortunately I have to give it back because we couldn't
find any students who wanted it." So, I need your help. Please contact me if
you, or ANYONE you know is interested in the program. Don't worry about
whether or not you (or they) have taken the GMAT, etc. All you need to do at
this point is JUST APPLY.
About the Program: The Master of Art in Management program is
designed specifically for liberal arts majors only. The MA degree program is
a 10 month intense study of the basic functional areas of business.
After graduation and working for approximately two years, all MA graduates
are eligible to apply to Wake Forest as part of the MA/MBA joint degree
program and get the MBA in one year. The new Dean, Steve Reinemund, has
created a new scholarship for diverse students pursuing the MA degree called
the Corporate Fellowship.
The Corporate Fellowship provides full tuition and a $21,000 stipend to
cover living expenses. Additionally, each Corporate Fellow will participate
in a practicum. The practicum has two components, educational and
professional development. Each student will be assigned a mentor that is a
high level executive with their sponsor corporation. The mentor will oversee
an educational project covering 4 of the functional areas of business using
their own corporation as the subject.
The student will visit the corporation 3 - 4 times during the program to
present his/her results of their res arch project.
Additionally, the "professional development" component of the fellowship
provides career coaching and leadership development for the students.
The goal for the corporation is to be able to groom and hopefully, hire a
top candidate from a diverse background for their
organization.
Of course, there is no obligation that the students accept any offer of
employment. Still, the student benefits, even if they are not ultimately
hired by their sponsor corporation in that they have the MA degree and the
type of experience that will make them more marketable.

Given the recent attacks on 127th and 126th Streets, it would probably be a good time to have more of a presence at the Precinct 28 Community Council Meeting.

The precinct community council meetings are held on the second Wednesday of the month at 6:30 p.m. at the precinct station house.

Be Aware
One of our neighbors was robbed at gunpoint in front of his building (#57) at gunpoint after being followed from the subway by two young teenage boys. Let's be sure to watch our backs. Thank you to Jane for the heads-up.
How do we get these guns off the Harlem streets where they seem to be more commonplace? It seems we need to get more attention on this issue from borough and city government.
Thoughts?

Neighborhood Holistic
I'm thrilled to find out about this great neighborhood resource for health and wellness just a few blocks away. Their focus is on yoga, massage, holistic nutrition, meditation and now offer a boot camp conditioning class and acupuncture but why stop there...they also have special events such as art shows, lectures and film screenings.
For children, they have Karate and FREE introductory ballet classes.
Let's support this wonderful concept in our neighborhood.

Chez Lucienne - New Bistro Opens on Lenox between 125 and 126 St.
We were walking by what was the old Harlem Pizza and were pleasantly surprised to find a new French Bistro has opened up! Prices look very reasonable (nothing was over $20 on the menu) and the owner said the menu will be expanding soon to offer more dishes.
Let's try to support this new establishment - a rare occurence in these times!

Maysles Institute Theater
We have a theater located right down the block on Lenox between 127th and 128th street.
From their website (http://www.mayslesinstitute.org/cinema/index.html):
"The Maysles Cinema, a new non-profit theater in Harlem, is dedicated to the exhibition of documentary film and video. The cinema extends the Maysles Brothers’ principle that the lives of ordinary people not only deserve, but demand, our attention. We aim to foster a democratic viewing experience by selecting and presenting movies in collaboration with independent filmmakers, programmers, critics, local film clubs and organizations.
We work hard to solicit material and programs from amateur video-graphers, “hood” documentarians, street vendors, video store-owners, neighbors and citizen-activists. In addition to presenting the masterworks of the documentary tradition, overlooked or under-distributed gems and new releases, we build a space for meaningful social exchange. We offer a forum for the discussion of questions of social, racial, and economic justice and explore liminal areas of knowledge.
The space can be rented out for video screenings, lectures, theatrical readings, live music, and sometimes dance parties.
$7 General Admission (suggested).Limited seating available so be early.
The Maysles Institute is made possible with public funds from the New York State Council for the Arts (NYSCA)."
Please support this local theater - we plan on attending many of the shows that are part of "CUBA IN HARLEM: A DOCUMENTARY RETROSPECTIVE" starting today (January 23) and running through January 31st.
